About the course

This online course is for allied health professionals looking to increase their knowledge of diabetes and improve the support they provide to people living with diabetes.

This diabetes training is suitable for mental health professionals, audiologists, dietitians, exercise professionals, occupational therapists, optometrists, and dental professionals. It will benefit any allied health professional who is working with people living with diabetes and is part of the persons diabetes team. The course is 3.5 hours of continuing professional development (CPD)

How does this course work?

  • Once you enrol online you will automatically gain access to your course in our e-Learning platform. Everything you need to complete the course is available online, with 24/7 accessibility.
  • The course consists of 6 modules and 2 assessments. The assessments are multiple-choice and results are shown immediately.
  • Once you have passed the assessments you will be able to download your ‘Certificate of Completion’ for your CPD records.
  • The course takes around 3.5 hours to complete, you will have 12-months access to the course from your enrolment date. This enables you to learn on-demand, at your own pace, and at time that suits you.

 

This eLearning course consists of 6 online modules with knowledge checks throughout and 2 multiple choice assessments.  It should take you about 3.5 hours to complete. The key learning objectives of the course are outlined below.

Module 1: Introduction

  • Recognise why it is important to follow this training on diabetes and why diabetes is a significant health problem in Australia.

Module 2: Diabetes explained

  • Describe what diabetes is, signs and symptoms, and what the two underlying problems are for all types.
  • Describe normal glucose metabolism.
  • Describe the key features of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, including the prevalence, cause, presentation and management.
  • Describe the key features of gestational diabetes.

Module 3: Risk factors for type 2 diabetes

  • Name the risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Identify the actions to take with people (at risk) to delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Module 4: Managing diabetes

  • Describe in which ways diabetes can be managed.
  • Describe the purpose of a Diabetes Team, the different roles within the team and how it can help a person manage their diabetes.
  • Describe what the diabetes Annual Cycle of Care is.
  • Describe the acute and long-term diabetes-related complications.

Module 5: NDSS, Diabetes organisations and Medicare

  • Describe what the NDSS is, eligibility and registration process and the benefits of
    registration.
  • Describe what diabetes organisations such as Diabetes Australia are and what they do to support people with diabetes. As well as how people can become members and what the benefits of membership are.
  • Describe the entitlements under Medicare for people with diabetes.
  • Explain the Medicare chronic disease management plan.

Module 6: Talking the talk

  • Describe the type of language used to engage and support people living with diabetes.
  • Describe the types of positive words that can be used to encourage a positive interaction with a person living with diabetes.

After completing the Practical Diabetes for Allied Health Professionals course you will:

  • Have an increased knowledge and understanding about diabetes management; what is diabetes, what causes it, what are the key signs and symptoms, how is it managed and organisations that can provide support to your clients. 
  • Be able to have a helpful and supportive conversation with the people you see, providing helpful information and encouraging the person to continue to look after their diabetes.
  • Know how to ask the right questions, and when to refer to other health professionals for more individualised advice.
  • Have the tools and resources to implement what you’ve learnt in your workplace, improving health outcomes for the people you see.

Students have the flexibility to study in their own time online in the Diabetes Qualified Learning Management System. We recommend using a desktop computer or laptop with the Chrome website browser.

On completion of the course and by passing the assessments. You will instantly be able to download your certificate  of completion for your CPD records.

FAQ

  • Are the assessments multiple choice and how many attempts do I get?

    Yes, the 4 assessments are multiple choice, with either one or multiple correct answers.  You get 3 attempts to pass with a score of 80% of more. If for some reason you need more attempts please email us.

  • How do I get my CPD Certificate of Completion?

    Once you have completed this online CPD course and passed the  multiple choice assessments, a ‘Certificate of Completion’ becomes available for download from the learning management system. This will only show once you have completed the course evaluation survey.

  • How long do I have access to the course?

    12 months. The time is calculated from when you enrol into the online program. Friendly email reminders will be sent to ensure the course is completed within the time period. If you need an extension due to exceptional circumstances please just email us.
