About the Disability Support Worker Online Training

Support Workers play an important role in taking care of the person living with diabetes and can help them practice good diabetes care. Effective self–care results in better health related outcomes and quality of life for the person living with diabetes. This eLearning program will provide disability support workers with a basic understanding of diabetes, and how it relates to their work and the situations that arise from their role.

How does this course work?

  • Once participants enrol online they will automatically be provided with access to the course in our  e-Learning platform. Everything they need to complete the course is available online, with 24/7 accessibility.
  • This is a short course that takes maximum of 2 hours to complete.
  • It is interactive and has real life case studies with practical examples of how to support the person with diabetes, and when to refer to a supervisor.
  • Once participants have completed the course they will be able to download a ‘certificate of completion’.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this course, participants will:

  • Gain a basic understanding of diabetes, and how to recognise signs and symptoms of diabetes in people in their care
  • Recognise the difference between high and low blood glucose levels, and know the appropriate action to take
  • Be able to identify and flag issues which may lead to the reduction in diabetes related complications such as infections
  • Improve their ability to support the person living with diabetes and have a meaningful and helpful conversation

Knowledge Checks

Throughout the course the user will be asked ‘ knowledge check’ questions, these are multiple choice questions. This is not an assessment and no grades are provided. It is a ‘ self check ‘ for the user to help them confirm what they have learnt.

There are further reading resources provided and tools such as diabetes management plans to download.

 

 

 

Online Delivery

Students have the flexibility to study in their own time online in the Diabetes Qualified Learning Management System. We recommend using a desktop computer or laptop with the Chrome website browser.

Certificate

On completion of the course participants will instantly be able to download a certificate  of completion.

FAQ's

  • Do you have training on how to administer insulin?

    Currently, we do not have practical training available for insulin administration, but are keen to do so in future. We are actively developing a course in insulin administration for disability support workers, aged care workers, and childcare workers. We anticipate its availability by mid-2024.
