About the Webinar

People with type 1 diabetes have a higher prevalence of disordered eating and eating disorders than their peers. There are serious consequences of these comorbid conditions. However, clinical pathways and practical guidelines are lacking, which poses considerable challenges even to experienced health professionals. As a result, diabetes teams may miss an opportunity to identify and address disordered eating.

The Queensland Diabetes State-wide Clinical Network developed a consensus clinical guideline to inform health professionals on the prevention, screening, assessment and management of disordered eating and eating disorders. A working group was established of diabetes and eating disorder professionals from several Australian states with clinical and research experience.

The guide addresses definitions of disordered eating and eating disorders in type 1 diabetes, prevalence and consequences. It discusses steps for prevention, a stepped care model of assessment, and interventions along with the physical indicators for hospital admission.

Proactive, bi-directional upskilling and collaborative care of diabetes and eating disorder teams is encouraged.

This clinical guideline will assist all professionals who care for those with type 1 diabetes including primary care providers and specialised diabetes teams. It is currently being adapted for the younger age group.
