About the Beat It Trainer Program

Beat It Trainer is an evidence-based program designed to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver safe and effective group-based physical activity and lifestyle programs for people who may be overweight and/or obese, and living with or are at risk of diabetes and other lifestyle-related chronic conditions.

The course is a two part education program suitable for: Accredited Exercise Physiologists, Exercise Scientists, Certificate IV Personal Trainers, Physiotherapists


Beat It Trainer has been accredited for 19 total CPD points by ESSA  and AUSactive (formally Fitness Australia) CEC’s  part 1 =10 and part 2 = 8

Part 1: Diabetes and Exercise online course (12 hours at your own pace)

The Diabetes and Exercise learning program provides exercise professionals with extensive knowledge of how to ensure exercise prescription is safe and effective for people living with diabetes and other lifestyle-related chronic conditions.The course has 13 modules, with 4 assessments. You will be enrolled online and can complete it at your own pace.

This online course is accredited for 11 CPD points from ESSA and 10 AUSactive (formally Fitness Australia) CEC’s.

Part 2: Beat It Trainer Face-to-Face training  (1 day)


Beat It face-to-face training days are currently being held online via Zoom.

The next training sessions will be held on:

  • Thursday 3 March 2022 (fully booked)
  • Monday 4 April 2022

Beat It Trainer is a face to face interactive training day that provides you with all the materials, content and support to initiate and run Beat It group physical activity programs. The training will cover:

  • Diabetes and the Beat It program
  • New technology
  • Latest research
  • Consultations and exercise assessments
  • Programming
  • Practical case studies

On successful completion, you will be a registered Beat It Trainer and have access to prospective clients, ongoing support and resources from Diabetes Qualified.

This practical course is accredited for 8 CPD points from ESSA and 8 AUSactive (formally Fitness Australia) CEC’s.

Learning Outcomes from this CPD Course

By completing this course you will:

  • Have increased knowledge and understanding about diabetes and diabetes management
  • Be able to create a safe and effective exercise plan for people living with diabetes
  • Have the ability to support the person living with diabetes and have a more helpful conversation using health literacy principles

CPD Course Details

Part 1: Diabetes and Exercise Online Course has 13 modules, with 4 assessments. It takes 12 hours in total to complete online, and you can do it at your own pace.

Part 2: 1 Day Face to Face Training needs to be completed after you have passed the online course. This additional 1 day face to face training will enable you to become a registered facilitator of the Beat It Physical Activity and Lifestyle Program.

eLearning Modules

  1. Introduction

    Importance of diabetes education and diabetes figures to outline how diabetes is a significant health problem in Australia.

  2. Exercise Guidelines

    Physical activity recommendations relating to aerobic activity, resistance training and weight loss.

  3. Risk factors for diabetes

    Risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes and action to take to delay the onset.

  4. Understanding Diabetes

    Prevalence, cause, prevention, presentation and management of type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

  5. Living with diabetes

    Diabetes management, Monitoring, Healthy eating, Medications, Mental Health, Screening for complications.

  6. Diabetes and Exercise

    Blood glucose levels & different types of physical activity, exercise-related safety precautions.

  7. Acute complications and exercise

    Hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia, strategies and action plans, emergency plans.

  8. Hypertension, dyslipidaemia and exercise

    Hypertension and exercise, Dyslipidaemia and exercise.

  9. Microvascular complications and exercise

    Chronic microvascular complications for diabetes, Retinopathy, Nephropathy, Peripheral neuropathy, Autonomic neuropathy.

  10. Macrovascular complications and exercise

    Cardiovascular disease, Coronary artery disease, Stroke, Peripheral vascular disease.

  11. Musculoskeletal conditions and exercise

    Arthritis, Hand, Feet, Shoulder, Spine.

  12. Talking the talk

    Language used to engage and support people living with diabetes.

  13. Putting it into practice

    Have a supportive conversation with a person living with or at risk of diabetes (and other complications) and create a safe and effective Exercise Plan with that person.

Face-to-Face Training Day

You must have successfully completed the online training (Diabetes and Exercise Online) before you can attend the face to face training day.

Ongoing Support

Once both courses are successfully completed, you will be accredited for 2 years as a Beat It Trainer, and we will provide you with 24 months of support including:

- Assistance in establishing initial client base via electronic mail-out to up to 700 potential clients from the NSW & ACT database
- Website listing for any Beat It programs you are currently running
- Access to Beat It templates and support materials
- Promote your Beat It programs at our local community events
- Online community of fellow Beat It trainers
- Quarterly enewsletter
- Opportunity to utilize Beat It program branding within your facility
- Access to additional professional development opportunities

On completion of the online course by passing the assessments and successfully passing the 1 day training course. You will receive a certificate in the learning management system. This will provide you with accreditation for 24 months as a Beat It Trainer. On expiry you will need to complete the Beat It Refresher Course to be able to continue to deliver the program.

What is Beat It?

Beat it

Beat It: Physical Activity and Lifestyle Program is an evidence-based exercise program for people with, and at risk of, diabetes. Diabetes NSW & ACT developed this program to support people living with diabetes in becoming more active in their lifestyles, and to get greater control over their condition.

  • 8 week program
  • One-on-one initial consultation
  • 2 x 1 hour exercise sessions per week
  • 6 x weekly 30-minute lifestyle education sessions
  • Approximately 12-15 participants per program
  • Available for free to participants accessing NDSS funded programs (*subject to availability)

Beat It subcontracting opportunity

Diabetes NSW & ACT will be funding a limited number of Beat It programs in various locations around NSW and ACT. This funding is intended to increase access to the Beat It program within the broader community, with a particular focus on areas with a high service need or low access to diabetes specific support services. To be eligible for Diabetes NSW & ACT program funding you need to fulfil certain eligibility criteria. For more information, email

It is a COMPLUSORY PRE-REQUISITE that you have completed the initial face to face program before completing this Refresher program, otherwise you are not eligible to become a BEAT IT Trainer. BEAT IT Trainer Refresher includes six modules which have been developed by Accredited Exercise Physiologists, Accredited Practising Dietitians and Credentialled Diabetes Educators. The content covers chronic disease in Australia, the physical activity guidelines, diabetes, acute & chronic complications, exercise considerations and recommendations, and nutrition for physical activity.

In addition to refreshing BEAT IT Trainers with how to run a successful BEAT IT program, with the program now includes the added bonuses of advertising and ongoing support. A mark of greater than 80% in required in order to successfully complete the program requirements.

Prior to registering into the online course, it is your responsibly to ensure you have a current CPR certificate and have completed the BEAT IT Trainer face to face program.
